The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is looking for 100 attendees at the 2012 Annual Conference who can use their HR skills to assist others with job search skills.
On Saturday, June 23, SHRM members will work from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with residents of the Shepherd’s Inn for men on Ivan Allen Boulevard in downtown Atlanta. An estimated 70 to 100 male clients are expected to participate in the job skills program.
Clients have endured homelessness for anywhere from three to 12 months; most are low-skilled individuals and have been in and out of poverty for a number of years, according to a mission spokesperson. Attendees will help clients search for jobs online, build an effective resume and cover letter, and learn how to present themselves in interviews. Attendees will rotate among various workstations during the three-hour service project, according to Lauren Liles, CMP, SHRM meeting planner.
SHRM is coordinating the project with
Hands on Atlanta, one of the largest community-based volunteer service organizations in the United States and a model program that has been studied and replicated across dozens of cities, according to Liles.
It is made up of more than 400 nonprofit organizations and schools that assist individuals, families and corporate and community groups. Over the past 23 years, Hands on Atlanta has mobilized more than 6.5 million hours of volunteer service to more than 4,000 nonprofits and schools throughout the greater Atlanta area.
Conference attendees will walk to the shelter, which is not far from the Georgia World Congress Center at 285 Andrew Young International Blvd., NW. Those who are interested in volunteering but unable to travel on foot will be accommodated.
There is no fee to participate in the service project. Registration will be open the day of the event, provided the number of participants has not reached the maximum of 100, Liles said.
“If we can use our members’ skills to benefit the men at the shelter,” Liles said, “then I think we’ve done our job.”
