Ferio has been a faculty member in the graduate HR management program at Rutgers University in Brunswick, N.J.—and student chapter advisor—since 2005. He teaches global executive leadership development, HR strategy and metrics and advises the SHRM student chapter affiliated with Rutgers' School of Management and Labor Relations.

Since 2005, the chapter has organized an annual one-day spring business conference that attracts more than 200 top executives, HR professionals, graduate and undergraduate students, and Rutgers HR faculty and staff experts. The conference is free to students and faculty.

Under Ferio, the chapter won the SHRM Outstanding Student Chapter Award in 2013-14, the SHRM Merit Award in 2010-11, and the SHRM Superior Merit Award for the 2007-08 and 2009-10 school years.

Prior to joining the university in 2015, Ferio worked at Schering-Plough Corp., a global pharmaceutical business headquartered in Kenilworth, N.J.; GE/RCA, Solid State Division, a semiconductor business in Wilmington, Del.; and the now-defunct Manufacturers Hanover Trust in New York City. He is a member of SHRM and HR People + Strategy.

Judges for Advisor of the Year consider length of service to the student chapter; advisor's contribution to the development of student leaders; the number of chapter members who are SHRM members; the consistency of the quality of the chapter from year to year; the number of chapter members that sit for the Assurance of Learning Assessment; and any obstacles that the advisor had to overcome, such as all the student officers graduating the same year.

Ferio will receive a plaque, $1,000 monetary award, $1,000 toward travel and housing for Annual Conference, and complimentary conference registration.
