The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is gearing its two-day Emerging LEAD(HR) Conference around those concepts as it prepares to kick off its inaugural event Sept. 30 at the Wynn Las Vegas in Nevada.
The conference is aimed at high-potential, mid-level HR professionals with six to 20 years of experience who aspire to a leadership role in their career as an HR professional.
“This is all about the skills they need to move their career forward,” as well as to become “a more effective leader in their current position at their current company,” said Letty Kluttz, SPHR, director of conference programming and development at SHRM.
The conference content is based on SHRM’s new nine-part competency model. Attendees may earn up to 10.5 general recertification credits in three of the nine competencies—Communication, Business Acumen and Relationship Management.
Concurrent sessions—the majority of which will be repeated throughout the conference—will follow an interactive rather than a lecture format, Kluttz said.Keynote speakers are:
*Sept. 30—Ann Rhoades, founding executive vice president of people at JetBlue Airways and founder of People Ink, will speak on “Off-the-Wall Leadership: Creating a value-Centric Culture.”
*Oct. 1—Patrick Lencioni, founder and president of The Table Group and best-selling author of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable (Jossey-Bass, 2002), will look at “The Five Temptations of a Leader.”
An Oct. 1 panel will discuss “A Glimpse into the Mind of an Executive Search Consultant.” Panelists are Jerry McGrath, DHR International; Amy Goldfinger, Heidrick & Struggles; and George Bongiorno, Korn/Ferry. Brian J. Glade, SPHR, GPHR, formerly of SHRM and current managing director of global strategy and the Americas at the Association of Executive Search Consultants, will moderate.
Two pre- and two post-conference sessions, each eight hours long, are available at an additional $580 per session.
The Sept. 29 sessions will address “Communicating with Credibility as an Emerging Leader,” which is worth 7.5 recertification credits toward the communication competency, and “HR Business Partners: Consulting Skills Model,” worth 7.5 recertification credits toward the business acumen competency.
The Oct. 2 sessions will address “Finance for Strategic HR,” worth 7.5 recertification credits toward the business acumen competency, and “Expanding Your Influence: A Coaching Experience for Emerging Leaders,” worth 7.5 recertification credits toward relationship management and communication. The session on coaching will be followed by six one-hour virtual group coaching sessions scheduled for a later date.
