HR knowledge advisors from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) will be fielding questions from attendees at the SHRM 2017 Annual Conference & Exposition in New Orleans.Staffers from SHRM's "Ask an Advisor" service in the HR Knowledge Center will be available to answer HR-related queries from SHRM members and nonmembers. It will be the first time this service has been available at Annual Conference. "This allows us to have more exposure with our membership. A lot of members don't know about the advisor service and the value it provides," said John Austin, the center's operations manager.Access to the HR Knowledge Center is one of SHRM's most popular member benefits, according to Amber Clayton, SHRM-SCP, the center's director.

"I love this feature of SHRM," stated member Michelle Emery, SHRM-CP, an HR generalist at Midcontinent, a telecommunications company in Minneapolis. "It is real-time help when a situation arises during the workday, and it is much appreciated."Advisors have an average of 20 years of HR experience, and they're bringing their expertise to New Orleans for three days. "It's an opportunity to ask HR experts HR-related questions [and] receive general guidance and resources related to their request," Clayton said. "We're not attorneys and cannot provide legal advice. But we can answer questions around topics like compensation and benefits, employee relations," and other areas of interest to HR.Find the HR Knowledge Advisors Central Booth in the Connection Zone of the Exhibit Hall of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center from 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday. Advisors will field questions on a first-come, first-served basis. Advisors may need to follow-up with an e-mail if a question requires in-depth research, Clayton said. She reminded SHRM members that the 18 advisors in the HR Knowledge Center are available year-round from 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m. EST Monday through Friday and can be reached by phone, e-mail and online chat. Members receive up to 15 interactions with an advisor during their membership year, as well as unlimited access to Express Requests, a self-service resource that provides SHRM members with information on a variety of HR topics.
