The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) awarded its 100,000th certification in March to Tina J. Johnson, SHRM-CP, of Louisville, Ky.

SHRM launched the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) certifications in January 2015. It is the fastest-growing HR credential program, with more than 101,550 people in 105 countries having earned the credentials, according to SHRM.

"This milestone is an achievement, not only for SHRM certification, but for the HR profession," said Wayne Cascio, Ph.D., chair of the SHRM Certification Commission, in a news release. "It is a testament to SHRM's ability to offer an accredited credential program in two years as well as to HR professionals who have proven their high level of knowledge and skills," he added. Cascio is a distinguished university professor and the Robert H. Reynolds chair in global leadership at the University of Colorado Denver School of Business.

Johnson has been a SHRM member since 1998 and has more than 15 years of HR experience. She served as HR director for an online retailer of personalized goods until the company reorganized about one year ago, laying off Johnson and her HR staff.

She said she values professional accreditation.

"It's something great to have. I think [SHRM certification is] very well-respected in the industry" and something employers look for, she told SHRM Online

More than 53,000 HR job postings last year listed a preference for applicants with SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credentials, according to SHRM.

Johnson said she especially liked the global perspective the study materials provide.

"[Global HR] wasn't something I did on a daily basis, and I really enjoyed [studying] that piece of it," she said.

The deadline for applying to take the SHRM-SCP and SHRM-CP certification exam is March 24, the window for the spring test is May 1-July 15.

SHRM Certification Program

SHRM launched the certifications after years of research to define the behavioral competencies and knowledge relevant to today's global HR professional, and SHRM continues to refine the competencies. An update of the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge, the framework for the certification exams, was released in 2016.

SHRM's certification program and exams are accredited by the Buros Center for Testing, an independent, nonprofit organization within the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The center is housed in the Department of Educational Psychology in the College of Education and Human Sciences.

Once SHRM certified, professionals can take advantage of more than 40,000 educational programs and a personalized education program to recertify. Tools such as a mobile app help simplify the recertification process. Android users can find the app at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.shrm.certification&hl=en; iOS users can find it at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shrm-certification/id1138438106?mt=8.

"It's exciting to see more and more HR professionals making the commitment to become SHRM-certified," said Henry G. "Hank" Jackson, SHRM's president and CEO, in a news release.
