The National Academy of Human Resources (NAHR) Foundation has awarded Lt. James Walsh, a U.S. Navy search-and-rescue pilot, the NAHR Graduate Student Scholarship.

Walsh resides in Key West, Fla., where he serves in the military and is a full-time student pursing a master’s degree in HR management at Florida International University. He has maintained a 4.0 grade point average. Walsh plans to retire from the Navy in three years and start a new career in HR in the civilian world, according to an NAHR news release.

NAHR and the SHRM Foundation entered into a partnership to establish the $5,000 annual NAHR Graduate Student Scholarship. NAHR will fund the scholarship, and the Foundation will select the recipients. Walsh is the second recipient since the scholarship was established in 2015. Gerald Roberts was the first winner; he had served as vice president of a student SHRM chapter and graduated in December 2016 with a master’s degree in HR.

Scholarship beneficiaries must be enrolled in a master’s degree program with an emphasis on HR or an HR-related program. Applicants are evaluated on SHRM student chapter involvement or other demonstrated commitment to the HR profession, academic achievement, additional leadership and service activities or work experience, and financial need.

NAHR was founded in 1992 and recognizes individuals of distinction in HR for exceptional professional achievement as “Fellows of the NAHR.” The academy installed five members in its 25th Fellows class in 2016; only 163 people have been named Fellows since NAHR was founded. The NAHR Foundation conducts outreach programs to the profession through various projects and studies.

NAHR also occasionally recognizes HR-related groups as “Honored Institutions/Organizations.” In 2014, it recognized the SHRM Foundation as an honored organization. In 2016 the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) was one of three organizations that served as grand sponsors for that year’s NAHR annual dinner and installation ceremony in New York City.
