SHRM Foundation Announces Innovation Award Winners

Five Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) chapters and one SHRM state council are taking home trophies as winners of the new SHRM Foundation Innovation Award.

The award recognizes chapters and state councils that “go above and beyond in exemplifying and fulfilling the SHRM Foundation’s mission,” said Elissa O’Brien, SHRM-SCP, SHRM’s vice president of membership. The awards were presented Nov. 20, 2015, at the SHRM Volunteer Leaders’ Summit in Washington, D.C.

The Foundation announced the new award in September 2015. Applicants were asked to tell how their chapter or council supported the SHRM Foundation in its mission to advance global human capital knowledge and provide thought leadership. In addition, they must have received the SHRM Foundation Champion award in 2014 and have made a donation of any amount to the Foundation from chapter or council funds at some time from January 1, 2015 through Oct. 15, 2015.

In addition to the trophy, award recipients will have an electronic logo that they may use to promote their win and will be recognized in the SHRM Foundation’s monthly update and 2015 Annual Impact Report.

The Foundation also will be increasing the dollar amount of education and certification scholarships to more than $300,000, said Tom Darrow, chairman of the SHRM Foundation board. The Foundation will award more than $170,000 in 2015 to support the continuing education of working HR professionals and students.

In other news, O’Brien announced that SHRM’s online Volunteer Leaders’ Resource Center is being revamped. Changes include new and more practical content, a new membership marketing brochure, and Volunteer Exchange, which is a place where volunteer leaders can share successful practices, documents/information with other volunteers and pose questions to other volunteer leaders and SHRM staff. More changes are to come in 2016.

The SHRM Affiliate Program for Excellence (SHAPE) program and its Excel Awards submission process will be simplified and streamlined, O’Brien said.

SHRM also plans to offer e-mail options for non-100-percent chapters; 100 percent chapters that are those that require SHRM membership to belong to the local chapter.

Additionally, representatives from Bank of America received a plaque during the summit for winning the 2015 HRM Impact Award for its Universal Fit Pre-Hire Assessment program, which it implemented in 2014.

The award, which SHRM, the SHRM Foundation, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) and the SIOP Foundation launched in 2013, recognizes HR practices and initiatives that have been measured and determined successful.
