SHRM VP Named HRPS Executive Director

Lisa Connell is the new executive director of HR People & Strategy (HRPS), the organization announced Dec. 3, 2013.

HRPS, whose membership consists of chief HR officers and other top executives, became an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) in July. Connell has led a team overseeing HRPS’s transition from its Chicago home office to Alexandria, where it will be located with SHRM’s headquarters. As executive director, Connell will serve as HRPS’s chief executive officer with accountability for executing organizational strategy and providing executive leadership for HRPS staff and operations.

Connell is the former vice president for education at SHRM.

“We are excited Lisa Connell will be joining us and welcome her leadership and experience in advancing HRPS’s mission,” HRPS Board Chair Edie Goldberg said. “I had the pleasure of working with Lisa over the last three months during the transition to a SHRM affiliate and have been impressed with her leadership style and keen business insight.”

“During her 15 years with SHRM, Lisa has proven herself to be a strategic and effective leader,” said Henry G. "Hank" Jackson, SHRM’s president and CEO. “I am confident that she will continue to make important contributions to SHRM’s and HRPS’s shared goal of serving HR professionals.”

“I am honored to be joining this esteemed HR organization at such an exciting time in its history,” Connell said.“Being able to work with a group of accomplished senior HR business leaders and having the opportunity to contribute to HRPS’s success is an exciting opportunity.”

At SHRM, Connell was responsible for developing and implementing educational products and certification preparation for members and oversaw the Society’s educational programs and strategic partnerships.

She managed SHRM’s portfolio of programs that address the HR competencies and proficiencies, and the SHRM Learning Systems. Also responsible for business development, Connell led a team of 15 staff and business operations that are in excess of $20 million.

As a member of SHRM’s Vice Presidents’ Council, Connell contributed to SHRM’s general operations and strategic initiatives.

She began her career at SHRM in finance and held positions of increasing responsibility in the professional development division. Also among her roles, Connell oversaw budget and business plan development and implementation for SHRM’s marketing and professional development divisions.

The Virginia Tech graduate has a bachelor’s degree in business management.

SHRM worked with HRPS before the two groups established a formal alliance. In 2012 they co-published an HRPS book, Point Counterpoint: New Perspectives on People & Strategy, which features essays by 120 thought leaders from 14 countries. The book was so well received that SHRM reprinted it, said Christopher A. Anzalone, manager of book publishing at SHRM.

In 2012, SHRM joined forces with the Council for Global Immigration (formerly known as the American Council on Immigration Personnel) to pursue advocacy and thought leadership on pressing global talent management issues, such as immigration reform.
