Responding to severe earthquakes that claimed tens of thousands of lives and reduced Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, to rubble in January 2010, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is putting together various forms of assistance for inhabitants of the devastated Caribbean nation.
That includes providing monetary aid to Haiti and taking a leadership role in its relief and recovery efforts after disaster strikes.
SHRM is matching contributions from SHRM employees who donated in-house to the
American Red Cross International Response Fund by Jan. 28, 2010. In addition, it is working with
America’s Charities so SHRM members can contribute safely to any of nearly 35 disaster relief organizations operating in Haiti.
SHRM’s leadership role will focus on engaging the HR community in the U.S. and abroad through relevant HR-related content and serving as a clearinghouse for information and facilitating volunteers for recovery efforts.
In addition, it is exploring how to serve Haiti’s longer-term reconstruction. While SHRM is not a disaster relief organization, there are certain resources and content it can provide its members who are in, or have employees affected by, the disasters, a SHRM spokesman said.
