It Doesn’t Hurt To Try To Be a Best Company To Work For

By Eric Reed Aug 12, 2008

Not making the list of the Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for in America doesn’t mean a company won’t benefit from applying.

All applicants will receive survey information that will tell them more about their employees and where they stand compared to other companies of similar size.

The list, which is sponsored by the Great Place to Work Institute Inc. and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), recognizes the top 25 small (50-250 employees) and medium (251-999 employees) companies in the United States. The companies are rated by their employees with tools such as the Trust Index, which is a series of statements that employees indicate their agreement on a range of less to more. Companies make the list based on employee perception of the workplace, said Lisa Ratner, a client relationship manager at the Great Place to Work® Institute.

Being on the list is very useful for companies. They receive “publicity, the ability to recruit top talent, and their employees gain pride in themselves and the company they work for,” Ratner says.

The application process is simple. The first step is logging onto and filling out a self-nomination form which only takes five to seven minutes. After companies do this, and the deadline for this nomination has passed, they are asked to write a 1,000-word essay. Companies receive their approval to compete for the list and are given seven to ten days to accept their nomination for participation.

Ratner encourages any organization to fill out the nomination form.

The deadline for this year’s Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for is Aug. 15, 2008, and the only way to apply is through the online application form. If there are problems encountered while filling out the form send an e-mail to
