‘When Work Works’ Program Announces Best Employers for Workplace Flexibility and Effectiveness

300 organizations named winners of Alfred P. Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility

NEW YORK — The Families and Work Institute (FWI) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) today announced the winners of the national Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility, exemplary employers that have created effective workplace environments supportive of employees’ need for flexibility.

The about 300 award-winning employers range in size from as few as 10 employees to as many as 240,000 employees, and they are found in more than 250 communities nationwide. The winners’ practices include traditional offerings such as telecommuting and more innovative approaches such as unlimited time off and allowing employees to control their hours.

“There is so much talk about the problems in the economy today but much less talk about bold new solutions. In the eight years that we have been conducting these awards, I have been deeply impressed with the truly innovative solutions these winners have created,” said Ellen Galinsky, president of the Families and Work Institute.

“The employers who win this award,” she continued, “are the best and most innovative in the nation, and they’re reaping the benefits in the success of their companies as they compete in a 24/7 global marketplace.”

To be named a Sloan award winner, employers complete a rigorous process that includes a survey of employees and a comprehensive assessment of whether the employer maintains an effective and flexible workplace.

No matter the size of the employer, innovative and generous work policies are a mainstay among the honorees. As examples,

  • Noble-Davis Consulting Inc. in Cleveland, which has fewer than 20 employees, allows its workers to set their own schedules. A new phone system allows the firm’s receptionist to work remotely. Its flexible work culture has positively impacted turnover: Only one person has left the firm in the last 10 years.
  • Southern California Gas Company has put into place an initiative called SmartWork, which allows for flexible work hours, telecommuting, location flexibility and extended leave options. And, because the company anticipates a number of retirements, it also has focused on succession planning, mentoring, part-time phased-retirement options and leadership development to meet the future need for skilled employees.
  • Delta Airlines, with almost 75,000 employees, provides 12 weeks partially paid paternity leave. It also allows employees to volunteer during work hours.

“These employers are creating workplace cultures that foster the development of effective and flexible workplaces for their employees,” said Lisa Horn, co-leader of SHRM’s Workplace Flexibility Initiative. “In the process, they are experiencing positive business results and seeing more productive and happier employees.”

The winners will be featured in the 2014 Guide to Bold New Ideas for Making Work Work published by FWI and SHRM. They will be honored in their cities or regions during ceremonies hosted by When Work Works community partners.
