Experts to speak on state law trends, immigration reform, ACA and more
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — More than 500 human resource professionals from across the United States are expected to attend the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) 2014 Employment Law & Legislative Conference March 17-19 at the Renaissance in Washington, D.C. (#SHRMLeg).
The conference will have presentations on new legislation surrounding state law trends, immigration reform, and health care reform – all current issues directly impacting human resources professionals. Sessions on other timely topics include: California-specific employment law, social media use in hiring, background checks in the hiring process, and Supreme Court decisions such as DOMA.
As part of the conference’s Capitol Hill Day on March 19, approximately 250 members from SHRM and the Council for Global Immigration, a SHRM affiliate, will meet with House of Representatives staff on the need for immigration reform and Senate staff regarding preserving the tax advantages for retirement savings, as well as support of Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Joe Donnelly’s (D-Ind.) proposed amendment to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s (PPACA) definition of a full-time employee. In total, HR advocates will meet with over 200 congressional offices.
Members meeting with House of Representatives staff will focus specifically on changing the current employment verification system to be completely electronic, increasing work visas for skilled works, and supporting the Trusted Employer system. Those meeting with Senate staff will advocate for tax benefits to expand retirement savings and also confirm their support for the Forty Hours Is Full Time Act, which proposes to change the PPACA definition of full-time employees from those working 30 hours per week to those working 40 hours per week.
