(Alexandria, Va., Aug. 21, 2007)—The Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) announced today the appointment of its new Executive Director, Mary E. Power.
Power, who has 28 years of corporate and association management experience, will assume her new role effective Aug. 27, 2007.
HRCI has certified nearly 90,000 HR professionals across the globe who have demonstrated a mastery of professional knowledge through rigorous testing in core HR principles and their application in business.
"Power brings key certification experience and joins HRCI at a time when the business community is increasingly recognizing the strategic contribution human resource (HR) professionals bring to managing the economy," said Kristi Acuff, chair of the board of directors, HRCI.
"HR management in the 21st century goes well beyond recruitment issues to encompass issues of health care, strategic business management, diversity, retention, professional development, and quality of life," said Acuff.
Power joins HRCI from the Convention Industry Council (CIC), where she served as president and CEO. The CIC is an international federation of 32 associations considered leaders in the convention, meeting and exhibition industries. As leader of CIC, she championed the development and implementation of voluntary standards and the global expansion of a voluntary certification program.
Prior to her work with CIC, Power was director of global sales for Inter-Continental Hotels and Resorts and held various sales positions with Sheraton Hotels. Power is a Certified Association Executive and has held multiple volunteer leadership positions with the American Society of Association Executives. In 2006, she was honored as one of the Top Five Outstanding Women Industry Executives by the New York Society of Association Executives. She is a graduate of Michigan State University.
Power will prove instrumental in educating the business world on the value of HRCI certifications. HRCI currently offers four certifications for practicing HR professionals: the PHR® (Professional in Human Resources); the SPHR® (Senior Professional in Human Resources); the GPHR® (Global Professional in Human Resources); and the California state-specific PHR-CA and SPHR-CA (PHR with state certification in California and SPHR with state certification in California).
HRCI is an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management, the world's largest professional association devoted to HR management.
