Employment verification methods and potential changes to the taxation of employer-provided retirement assistance are pressing issues for employers
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — More than 200 HR practitioners will meet with members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives on March 13 to discuss needed improvements to the employment verification process and allowing U.S. employers the opportunity to find the skilled workers they need to remain competitive in today’s global economy. In addition, they will discuss the impact of potential changes in taxation to retirement savings on businesses and employees.
The HR professionals, all members of the
Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), will visit Capitol Hill as part of the
2013 Employment Law & Legislative Conference, taking place March 10-13 at the Hyatt Regency Washington Hotel, 400 New Jersey Ave. NW in Washington, DC.
SHRM’s President and CEO Henry G. (Hank) Jackson, Representative Richard Neal (D-Mass.) and Representative Shelley Moore Capito (R-WVa.) will make opening remarks during a Hill Day breakfast before attendees embark on their visits with lawmakers.
During the Capitol Hill Day, conference attendees will talk to legislators about two employer-related issues:
1) Employment verification: SHRM and its members want policies that provide employers with effective tools for hiring a legal workforce and eliminating redundancies in the current employment verification system. SHRM believes congressional reforms should create one federal employment verification system that integrates the E-Verify system and a verification system removing the need for varied state laws.
2) Tax reform and deficit reduction: SHRM anticipates that in 2013, Congress will target tax-deferred employee benefits, such as retirement and health care plans, as a major source of revenue to reduce the federal deficit. SHRM believes tax incentives should be used to expand retirement savings. Employer-provided benefits that encourage employee savings, such as increased contribution limits and catch-up contributions for older workers, are important tools to recruit and retain employees.
Capitol Hill Day is one of the most popular events at SHRM’s annual Employment Law & Legislative Conference, which will draw more than 600 HR executives. The conference will focus on the impact of the 2012 election on the workplace and changing legal and business trends for employers.
CNN Political Reporter and Anchor Candy Crowley, Time Contributing Editor Jon Meacham, National Public Radio’s Legal Affairs Correspondent Nina Totenberg, and SHRM Vice President of Government Affairs Mike Aitken will keynote the conference. U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Commissioners Victoria Lipnic and Chai Feldblum also will speak at the conference.
