Many Benefits of Employees Taking that Summer Vacation, HR Professionals Say

Jun 16, 2014
As the summer season officially begins, vacation planning gets under way… or not. According to the SHRM/U.S. Travel Association: Vacation's Impact on the Workplace survey, many employees do not use all of their vacation days, leaving an average of three vacation days unused each year.

As a result, approximately three-quarters of human resource professionals agree or strongly agree that employees are missing out on many of the benefits of taking a vacation, including increased job satisfaction, productivity and engagement.

The survey polled 481 HR professionals from a randomly selected sample of SHRM’s membership.

Vacation Survey Highlights

  • Total Vacation Days: For paid vacation plans, most organizations (86 percent) provide full-time employees between 6-20 vacation days on average.
  • Vacation Benefits: HR professionals agree or strongly agree that employees who take most or all of their vacation are more likely to experience increased job satisfaction (78 percent), be more productive (77 percent) and perform better (75 percent) compared to employees who take less vacation.
  • Unused Days: Overall, 61 percent of organizations report that employees have an average of three or more unused vacation days each year.
  • Roll Over: About three out of five organizations (62 percent) allow employees to roll over vacation days to the next year—54 percent allow limited rollover days and 8 percent allow unlimited rollover.
  • Use-It or-Lose-It: More than one-third of organizations (38 percent) require employees to use all of their vacation days each year; otherwise, their vacation days will be lost.
