SHRM Issues Statement on Passage of American Dream and Promise Act

June 4, 2019
WASHINGTON — SHRM — the Society for Human Resource Management — issued this statement as the U.S. House of Representatives passed the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019 (H.R. 6) during Immigrant Heritage Month:
We applaud the House for bipartisan passage of legislation that provides Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) recipients and Dreamers legal status, work authorization and the opportunity to contribute permanently to the U.S. workforce.

As the country faces a growing skills gaps, we must ensure that all workers educated and trained in the United States can contribute their talents to the American economy.

SHRM advocated for a bipartisan legislative solution for DACA, and we are pleased that the House has passed a bill that strengthens our economy. We urge the Senate to do the same. By effectively addressing this important issue now, Congress can build momentum that will lead to solutions for other important challenges, including modernizing our workplace immigration system.

SHRM, the expert on all things work, will continue to work with both parties in Congress and the White House on bipartisan solutions that provide work-authorized talent, protect American workers and modernize workplace immigration to create better workplaces for a better world.
