SHRM Statement on SCOTUS Ruling on Affirmative Action

June 29, 2023

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — In the wake of today's SCOTUS ruling on affirmative action, SHRM reaffirms our enduring commitment to building better workplaces for a better world. For 75 years, SHRM has pushed for advancing HR among its community of HR professionals, in the workplace, and in public policy.

In our pursuit of elevating HR, we must weigh our impact on society and society’s impact on us. SHRM has long advocated for inclusive workplaces and diverse workforces because we understand the value people’s differing perspectives and experiences have for our business and society. We’ve seen the quantifiable mutual benefit to employers and employees.

The U.S. Supreme Court has spoken and clarified the constitutional issues surrounding affirmative action plans in higher education. SHRM respects the rule of law. Whether or not one agrees with the ruling, we must all turn to the critical task of supporting higher education human resource professionals as they both comply with today’s ruling and develop innovative approaches to build better workplaces for an increasingly diverse workforce. SHRM will always be a part of finding solutions that deliver for organizations and the people they serve.

As the push for inclusion and this ruling strikes a personal note for many, we must remember to listen to and understand each other to find a better way forward. To that end, we unite in SHRM’s mission to empower people and workplaces by advancing HR practices and maximizing human potential.
