Alexandria, Va. – Feb. 13, 2013 – The current 2013 flu season is having no negative impact on overall business operations say 60 percent of HR professionals surveyed by the
Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
survey findings mark a significant improvement over 2009, when only one-third (33 percent) of HR professionals reported the flu had no negative impact on business operations.
Still, 36 percent of HR professionals do indicate a moderate negative impact on operations. Only four percent reported a large negative impact.
“The organizations having implemented a communication and prevention plan were less likely to report a negative operational impact due to flu,” said Alexander Alonso, Ph.D., SPHR, and vice president of research at SHRM.

Additional survey findings show that 93 percent of organizations are making hand sanitizer, other disinfectants, masks, and flu preventions readily available in the workplace.
A large majority (82 percent) of organizations are frequently disinfecting common areas in the workplace.
Seventy-seven percent of HR professionals say their organization is offering employees free seasonal flu vaccines.
Regarding business travel alternatives during fly season, 26 percent of organizations are implementing video or audio conferencing capabilities. Nine percent of organizations are restricting non-essential employee business travel.
