Wayne Cascio Wins $50,000 Michael R. Losey Human Resource Research Award

Professor’s research on downsizing, turnover, and the financial effects of HR policies honored

SAN DIEGO − The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) today presented the $50,000 Michael R. Losey Human Resource Research Award to Wayne Cascio, Ph.D., at its 62nd Annual Conference and Exposition in San Diego.

The Losey award recognizes human resource professionals or researchers whose contributions significantly advance the field of human resource management. The award acknowledges major research accomplishments and aims to help fund and facilitate future individual contributions to the field.

Dr. Cascio was nominated for his research in three areas:

  1. The organizational effects of downsizing. Cascio proved that downsizing regularly fails to achieve the objectives set-out for it. Financial returns are often lower than the costs it imposes. Downsizing should be regarded as a last resort, is generally inferior to tactics designed to improve sales and profits, and should be conducted in a strategic manner.
  2. Quantifying the financial effects of human resource policies and practices.
  3. Employee turnover determinants and outcomes. Cascio’s research noted several points, including that while good performers tend to leave less often than bad performers, this is evened out to some extent by time over which turnover is measured, unemployment levels, and type of turnover (voluntary versus involuntary).

“Cascio's research examines some of the most important issues facing businesses today, including the impact of downsizing on employers and the causes of employee turnover,” said SHRM President and CEO Laurence G. O’Neil. “The Losey Award acknowledges the role Dr. Cascio’s past and current research will continue to play in the human resources profession.”

The Losey Award winner is chosen by a committee of seven, including representatives from each endowing organization and chaired by Deb Cohen, chief knowledge development and integration officer at SHRM.

The award, endowed with a $1-million gift and established in 2000, was named in honor of former SHRM President and CEO Michael R. Losey, SPHR, CAE. SHRM, the HR Certification Institute, and the SHRM Foundation jointly funded the endowment.

“The Losey Award is named for an individual who tirelessly has promoted the use of HR practices that are informed by established research findings” said Cascio. “I am humbled and honored to know that my research has contributed to his vision.”

More about Dr. Cascio

Wayne Cascio is the Robert H. Reynolds Chair in Global Leadership at the University of Colorado Denver Business School and a senior editor of the Journal of World Business. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources, the Academy of Management, and the American Psychological Association.

Cascio is the author of numerous books, including his Managing Human Resources, Investing in People, and Responsible Restructuring: Creative and Profitable Alternatives to Layoffs. He served as a member of the SHRM Foundation’s board of directors from 2000 to 2008, and as chair in 2007.

Dr. Cascio has spoken and consulted for numerous clients, including NASA, the CIA, Intel, Ford, and Delta Airlines. He has also acted as an HR expert witness and content expert in court cases, such as Ricci v. DeStefano, where Justice Ginsburg’s dissenting opinion cited Cascio’s work.

Cascio received a doctorate in industrial/organizational psychology from the University of Rochester in New York, a master’s degree in experimental psychology from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and a bachelor's degree in psychology from College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.
