An HR Consultant and a Professor Named to SHRM Certification Commission

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Two experts in human resources have been named to the SHRM Certification Commission, an advisory group for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) professional certification program.

Gerlinde Herrmann, SHRM-SCP, founder and president of The Herrmann Group in Toronto, and Nigel Phang, associate professor in the division of Strategy, Management and Organization at Nanyang Business School in Singapore, have joined the 12-member commission.

SHRM Certification is the premier professional certification in the human resources field. More than 96,000 HR professionals in 105 countries hold a SHRM certification. Based on the competencies and knowledge relevant to today’s global HR professional, SHRM Certification is accredited by The Buros Center for Testing.

The SHRM Certification Commission serves as an independent technical advisory committee. It manages the certification program — SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) — including development of the exams, eligibility criteria and recertification requirements.

Members of the commission are appointed by the SHRM Board of Directors to three-year terms.

• Wayne Cascio, Ph.D., professor and Robert H. Reynolds Chair in Global Leadership, University of Colorado-Denver School of Business, who serves as chair;
• John Boudreau, Ph.D., professor and research director, Center for Effective Organizations, University of Southern California-Marshall School of Business;
• Trent Burner, SHRM-SCP, vice president, global organizational effectiveness, Wal-Mart;
• Jeff Lindeman, SHRM-SCP, human resource functional leader, WD-40 Company;
• Betty Lonis, SHRM-SCP, senior vice president, human resources, Stonegate Mortgage;
• Santrupt Misra, Ph.D., CEO, Carbon Black Business, and director, group human resources, Aditya Birla Group;
• Susan Podlogar, vice president, human resources, Johnson & Johnson;
• Richard Vosburgh, Ph.D., president, RMV Solutions, and chair, HR People + Strategy Board of Directors;
• Tim Young, SHRM-SCP, director, talent acquisition and customer satisfaction, AutoZone Inc.;
• Sheldon Zedeck, Ph.D., professor emeritus of psychology, University of California-Berkeley.

Bios

Gerlinde Herrmann, SHRM-SCP, is the founder and president of The Herrmann Group, a consulting firm that provides executive search, HR and governance consulting, and leadership and executive coaching to support human resources strategies and talent
management initiatives. Prior to founding The Herrmann group, she worked with leading organizations such as Nortel and FedEx. Herrmann’s leadership experience includes serving on the SHRM and SHRM Foundation boards of directors. She is a member of the CPA Ontario Professional Conduct Committee. She also served three years as president and chair of the board of directors of the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA). She recently has been involved in industry-related and outreach initiatives, such as SHRM’s Global and Corporate Social Responsibility Special Expertise Panels, the Youth Employment Service Advisory Board, the Career Edge Diversity Board and the Canadian government’s Private Sector Working Group on Pandemic Influenza Planning. She has been a director on the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations, a director of the North American Human Resources Management Association, a Canadian representative on the Board of Frontplaces, an adviser for George Brown’s HR program, and an adviser on the Provincial Partnership Council (Passport to Prosperity). She is founder and director of the Toronto Chapter of HRPA. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in economics from Concordia University.

Nigel Phang is associate professor at Nanyang Business School, division of Strategy, Management and Organization at Nanyang Technological University. He teaches human resources and organizational behavior. His professional experience includes many years of working in multiple markets and across various industries in Asia. Prior to joining the faculty at Nanyang Technological University, he was the managing director of the Corporate Executive Board and general manager of China with Development Dimensions International. He also held HR director and other HR leadership positions in the civil service arena, at financial institutions and at high-tech manufacturing firms. He is a former military field psychologist in the Ministry of Defense in Singapore. As a trained industrial psychologist, he has a strong interest in talent analytics, human resource transformation, selection and succession management. He has published articles about the field of talent management and presented at several HR forums in Asia. He holds an MBA from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the National University of Singapore. He also holds a graduate diploma in personnel management from the Singapore Institute of Management, a Master of Science degree in occupational psychology from the University of Sheffield, and a graduate diploma in psychology from the University of Hull.
