Holiday Giving is Common Practice Among Majority of Organizations, New SHRM Survey Finds

Number of company holiday parties remains stable from last year

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — As part of company end-of-year activities, the majority of organizations (78 percent) report participating in holiday charitable giving such as donations or drives, according to a new research poll released today by the Society for Human Resource Management.

A little over one-half also organize employee gift exchanges such as White Elephant – 45 percent within departments, 5 percent companywide and 2 percent in both.

“Even though many companies and employees continue to recover financially post-recession, the research shows that the holidays are still a time for giving among employers,” said Evren Esen, manager of SHRM’s Survey Research Center.

Close to two-thirds (66 percent) of organizations will also have holiday parties in 2013, a number which remains stable since last year (72 percent).

Additionally, only 9 percent of companies will cut back on holiday parties this year because of financial challenges and only 4 percent will hold holiday parties on-site to save money.

Several other key findings include:

  • Three-fourths of organizations do not give nonperformance-based bonuses at the end of the year to employees, while 25 percent do offer them to either some or all employees.
  • The choice of when to have holiday parties is split. Forty-two percent will have them during business hours, and 43 percent during non-business hours. The other 15 percent close early on the day of the party.
  • A slight majority (60 percent) will have their corporate gathering off-site, and 36 percent will hold them on-site.
  • One-half of organizations will allow employees to bring a limited number of guests to holiday parties, while 45 percent do not allow guests.
