Confidence in Labor Market Receives Highest Rating from HR Professionals in Five Years, SHRM Jobs Survey Shows

Oct 28, 2014
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Almost two-thirds (64 percent) of HR professionals reported confidence in the U.S. job market for the second half of 2014, according to the Jobs Outlook Survey from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
In another sign of optimism, more than two out of five (42 percent) HR professionals said their organizations expected to add jobs in the second half of 2014, up from 35 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013. Only 9 percent of respondents said their organizations would conduct layoffs during the timeframe.
“This quarter’s findings represent a positive improvement for the U.S. job market, employers and employees,” said Jennifer Schramm, manager of workforce trends at SHRM. “However, it is important to remember that millions of Americans are still struggling to find work or taking part-time work even though it is not their preferred choice.”
The SHRM report examines hiring and recruiting trends based on an annual survey of more than 400 public- and private-sector human resource professionals who have a direct role in the staffing decisions at their companies. Survey respondents include all sizes of companies throughout the United States.
HR professionals’ optimism, however, varied according to U.S. region. Respondents from the West had the highest level of combined confidence (67 percent), while the Northeast had the lowest level of combined faith in the labor market (55 percent).
Among employment sectors, publicly owned for-profit companies (48 percent) and small organizations (46 percent) were most likely to create jobs during the July-to-December time frame.
