CalSHRM Conference Examines State Legislation and Law Affecting Workplace
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — HR professionals from across California will voice their support for a workplace flexibility bill during an April 24 visit with state legislators and their staff. The visit to the state capitol is being held during the annual Legislative & HR Conference of the California State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management (CalSHRM). HR’s voice also will be heard when an HR director testifies about the workflex bill at an April 23 Labor and Employment Committee hearing.
WHAT: 2014 California State Legislative & HR Conference
WHEN: Thursday, April 24, and Friday, April 25
WHERE: Sheraton Grand Sacramento Hotel, 1230 J St., Sacramento, CA 95814
WHO: CalSHRM Legislative Affairs Director Michael Kalt (partner, Wilson Turner Kosmo LLP of San Diego) will update HR professionals about pending California legislation at 8 a.m. Thursday, April 24.
DETAILS: About 60 conference attendees will visit the state capitol from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. April 24 to advocate on behalf of Assembly Bill 2448, which would permit a nonexempt employee to request a flexible work schedule of up to 10 hours a day within a 40-hour workweek.
According to CalSHRM, the bill would provide much needed flexibility by allowing individual employees to elect an alternate workweek schedule without the need for employers to comply with the difficult process of obtaining work-unit approval.
Deb Horne, past state director for CalSHRM, will testify about the benefits of the measure during an April 23 hearing of the Assembly’s Labor and Employment Committee. Horne is director of human resources for CMC Rescue Inc. in Santa Barbara.
CalSHRM also will speak with legislators about its opposition to Assembly Bill 1522, which would require employers to provide at least three paid sick days for an employee who works for seven or more days during a calendar year.
CONFERENCE DETAILS: The conference, which is open to media coverage, offers experts on employment law. Among the presentations are “Impacts of DOMA on FMLA and Other Laws” at 11:15 a.m. on April 24 and “A Fresh Perspective on Health Care Reform in California” at 3:15 p.m. on April 24. Media: CalSHRM’s State Director Mike Letizia of Stockton and Legislative Affairs Director Michael Kalt of San Diego are available for interviews.
