Two Elected to 2014 SHRM Foundation Board of Directors

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Ann Marie Ryan, a Michigan State University professor, and Karen B. Paul, an executive at 3M, have been elected to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Foundation Board of Directors.

They will serve three-year terms, beginning on Jan. 1, 2014.

Board member Tom Darrow, SPHR, founder and principal of Talent Connections LLC and Career Spa LLC, has been re-elected to the board and voted chair-elect for 2014. He will serve as chair of the board in 2015 and 2016.

In addition, two members were re-elected to the foundation board: Edward Lawler III, Ph.D., distinguished professor of business and director of the Center for Effective Organizations in the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, and Nereida Perez, vice president of global diversity and inclusion at Ingersoll Rand. Lawler will serve a two-year term, and Perez will serve a three-year term.

The SHRM Foundation, a not-for-profit affiliate of SHRM, advances global HR education and practice. It is governed by a board of directors who come from the HR profession, including academics, practitioners and representatives from SHRM membership.

Ann Marie Ryan, Ph.D., is a professor of organizational psychology at Michigan State University. Her research interests involve improving the quality and fairness of employee selection methods and diversity and justice in the workplace. She also consults with organizations on improving assessment processes. She is a past president of the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, past editor of Personnel Psychology and current associate editor of American Psychologist. In 2011, she received the Distinguished University Professor Award from Michigan State. She received a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in psychology and management from Xavier University and a master’s degree and doctorate in psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago.


Karen B. Paul, Ph.D., is the leader of the Global Measurement Center of Expertise at 3M, where she is responsible for creating and executing global strategy for executive assessment and coaching, testing, organizational survey research, employment brand, engagement and retention. She has been with 3M for 20 years and held both HR generalist and specialist assignments. Her research has been published in both major academic and professional journals. Paul’s newest book chapter, in The Executive Guide to Integrated Talent Management, details the five-year collaboration within talent solutions at 3M that has resulted in numerous awards. Paul earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of Northern Iowa, and she received a master’s degree and doctorate in industrial/organizational psychology from Bowling Green State University. She is a fellow in the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology and a charter member of the Association for Psychological Science.

Also serving on the SHRM Foundation board for 2014 are Steven Ginsburgh, senior vice president of HR and workforce development at Universal Weather and Aviation; Gerlinde Herrmann, CHRP, GPHR, founder and president of The Herrmann Group Limited; Richard Klimoski, Ph.D., professor of psychology and management at George Mason University; Elizabeth Larson, SPHR, compensation director at MassMutual; Sara Rynes, Ph.D., John F. Murray professor of management and organizations for the University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business; Libby Sartain, SPHR, human resources adviser and author of Brand for Talent and HR from the Heart; Tina Sung, vice president, government transformation and agency partnerships at the Partnership for Public Service; M. Susan Taylor, Ph.D., professor in the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland; Padma Thiruvengadam, HR director at Integra; and Jeff T.H. Pon, Ph.D., chief human resources and strategy officer at SHRM.
