SHRM Student Case Competitions Draw Attendees from 78 Universities Across the U.S.

Six colleges take home prizes for best presentations

May 11, 2017
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The 2017 Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Student Case Competition events, held in March and April, drew students from 78 universities across the United States.

Six universities—two from each division (Central, West and East)—took home first-place awards. The competitions were broken into Division I and Division II categories with one winner from each category at each event.

The competitions involved case studies that allowed team members to use knowledge acquired through their studies, which they then applied to a real-life HR situation. During the competitions, each team analyzed and solved a business case by preparing a written executive summary and 15-minute oral presentation, which required integrated HR thinking, ethical decision-making, and strong communication and presentation skills. Preliminary and final oral presentation rounds were judged onsite by a panel of certified SHRM members.

During the two-day events, students also received information relevant to HR management through professional speakers and practicing HR professionals. SHRM sponsors three Case Competition events across the United States yearly.

Winning teams and their advisors received free registrations to SHRM’s 2017 Annual Conference & Exposition, $2,500 in travel reimbursement and special recognition at the conference.

“SHRM’s Student Case Competition and Career Summits offer a unique opportunity for HR students to apply in-class learning to real-world HR scenarios and showcase their knowledge to seasoned HR practitioners,” said Susan Post, SHRM-SCP, East divisional director at SHRM. “These events also enhance students’ perspectives on the value and importance of what it means to be a member of the HR community and career partners with SHRM as they embark on their HR professional pursuits.”
