Amped-up Push for Immigration Reform from America’s Largest Employers

ACIP and SHRM Double Down on Advocacy Efforts with New Website, Ad Campaign; Coincides with Return of Congress and 2013 ACIP Advocacy Day

Washington, D.C., June 3, 2013 – A new online hub and print and online ad campaign marked a heightened push for immigration reform from U.S. employers today, as federal lawmakers return from recess and turn back to their legislative work. The enhanced effort to put forward employer solutions for immigration reform comes from the American Council on International Personnel (ACIP) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), strategic affiliates who together represent some of America’s largest employers, and it coincides with ACIP’s 2013 Advocacy Day, during which legal and HR immigration professionals will advocate for the practicable, effective immigration reforms U.S. employers need to help bolster the economy, create jobs and grow the workforce of the future.

“From manufacturing companies to university systems, we are excited to see such a breadth and depth of our membership speaking out today to tell Washington what American employers need to make immigration reform effective for today’s innovation economy,” ACIP Executive Director Lynn Shotwell said. “We can’t let any more time pass without fixing a dramatically broken system, and we will use our amped-up advocacy to show policymakers that employers have smart solutions to ensure reform works for America.”

“Our members are at the frontlines of immigration in the United States, and they are looking for a system that makes sense and works effectively for U.S. employers,” said Mike Aitken, SHRM vice president of government affairs. “Employers have the solutions, and we plan to continue our advocacy push and work with policymakers as the reform process moves forward this summer.”

The stepped-up campaign will feature a newly launched website – – as well as advertising and advocacy that all focus on three key employer solutions:

  • Certainty in hiring through enabling a single, federal, entirely electronic employment verification system that protects against identity theft.
  • Increased system efficiency through, among other improvements, creating a “Trusted Employer” system.
  • Access to highly educated and skilled talent by clearing backlogs and improving future access to green cards and temporary visas such as H-1B and L-1 visas.
