December Graduates: Finding a Job During the Holidays

Even in today’s hot job market, the holiday season is still a challenging time of the year to find employment. 

Therefore, finding a job as a December college graduate can prove quite difficult.  

However, despite some common challenges during this time of the year, there are workarounds. 

Several SHRM experts provide advice for these upcoming graduates and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of looking for a job in December.

Graduates in December need to be aware that this is one of the slowest times of year for recruitment. Many organizations are limited on the number of new hires they want to bring on around the holidays and right before New Year’s as there are often not enough resources to train a new employee this time. 
Tip: Start job searching early to avoid these challenges. That means if you anticipate graduation in December, you start applying to jobs in September. It doesn’t hurt to apply before you graduate as long as you indicate your anticipated graduation date on your resume.

I call the holiday timeframe the “Bermuda Triangle” for getting hired. Hiring managers are often in and out of the office. Their focus is different than Q1, when leadership is anxious to get new organizational structures shared and hired as soon as possible.
Tip: Try finding employers with different fiscal year periods—like academic institutions and public government entities, whose fiscal year may end in June. Those employers will have different budget flexibility around December to hire new employees.

December graduates encounter both advantages and challenges in their effort to secure employment. Disadvantages may come from the fact that many companies gear their recruiting patterns more toward May graduates, which may put these graduating students out of sequence with how organizations onboard new talent.
Tip: Thinking about it a bit differently, applying at this time of year could be an advantage. Many organizations start a new budget year in January, which may offer opportunities that are not available in the middle of the year. Also, many decision makers have more open schedules just prior to the holidays, allowing time to meet with new graduates.
