Focus is on expanding membership, new products, advocacy and global influence
Alexandria, Va. – The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) today announced the launch of a new five-year strategic plan to increase HR’s presence and influence as it promotes the value of human capital leadership and people management solutions.
The plan is the result of a comprehensive strategic business review SHRM conducted earlier this year.It charts a global growth strategy while aligning functions within SHRM for greater effectiveness at delivering information, programs, tools and support to its members and prospective members in the U.S. and around the world.
“As a professional membership organization, our members not only define SHRM, they
said SHRM President and CEO Laurence G. O’Neil. “As we reviewed our mission and goals, it was no surprise that the facts and evidence reaffirmed that SHRM’s core membership is our most important asset.
“The new five-year plan will allow SHRM to be more agile and responsive to external realities, more global in our perspective, stronger financially, and more proactive in delivering solutions and advocating on behalf of our members and the profession,” O’Neil said.
Pivotal to the five-year plan is a new vision statement that says, “SHRM will be a globally recognized authority whose voice is heard on the most pressing people management issues of the day, now and in the future.”
SHRM’s strategic plan will concentrate on six key areas:1) developing more world-class research and knowledge-based content for a growing core membership; 2) continuing to operate as a financially-sustainable organization to fulfill its mission; 3) expanding its advisor and advocacy roles worldwide; 4) attracting and engaging senior HR executives and other business leaders; 5) engaging and serving the HR needs of non-HR professionals; and 6) continuing to grow as a global organization in emerging markets, such as India and China.
The plan also provides a framework for SHRM to generate new and timely products, services, and research for its 250,000 members while advocating on behalf of the HR profession globally.
“The work that our members do every day is truly remarkable,” O’Neil said.“Our aim is to apply this knowledge more universally in order to help HR professionals and HR departments around the world succeed and meet any challenge.”
O’Neil said, “SHRM needs to be a truly global association, prepared to serve our members wherever they operate and cultivating new members in other countries.”
The strategic business review showed that India is the best non-U.S. market for SHRM to begin a more focused investment, largely because of the country’s growth rate, well-educated English-speaking population, need for HR services and products, and desire to be part of the global knowledge exchange.
SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management. For more information about SHRM, visit
