Three HR experts appointed to 2013 foundation board of directors
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 19, 2012 — The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Foundation has named Mark Schmit, Ph.D., SPHR, its new executive director.
Schmit, who has more than 25 years of experience in the human resources field, has been vice president of research for SHRM, providing strategic leadership for SHRM’s extensive survey and research programs.
“The SHRM Foundation is pleased to welcome Mark Schmit as its new executive director. An accomplished HR practitioner, he understands the needs and interests of the human resources industry and its professionals,” said James Schultz, who will serve as chair of the 2013 SHRM Foundation Board of Directors. “Mark’s valuable knowledge and experience will guide the foundation as it serves the industry through thought leadership, educational support and research,” added Schultz, human resources general manager at Chevron Corporation.
“I am excited to bring both my extensive research and HR background to the SHRM Foundation,” Schmit said. “I believe that the foundation is on a solid path to being among the most pre-eminent thought leader organizations in the field of HR. I am very excited and enthusiastic to be joining the foundation and helping to move it to the next level of excellence.”
Before joining SHRM in 2010, Schmit was western regional vice president at APTMetrics in Denver. He holds a doctorate degree and a master’s degree in industrial and organizational psychology from Bowling Green State University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from St. Norbert College.
“From the popular employee benefits survey to a thought-provoking poll that identified the skills gap, Mark has led an array of research that has been important to SHRM members today and beyond. With his forward thinking and leadership, the foundation is well-positioned to meet the needs of HR professionals as the workplace of tomorrow evolves,” said Henry G. (Hank) Jackson, SHRM president and CEO.
The SHRM Foundation, a not-for-profit affiliate of SHRM, advances global HR education and practice. It is governed by a board of directors who come from the HR profession, including academics, practitioners and representatives from SHRM.
Three experts in the field of human resources have been named to the foundation board for 2013:
Herrmann was named to a one-year term. Rynes and Sartain will serve three-year terms. Their appointments take effect Jan. 1, 2013.
Also serving on the board for 2013 are: Howard J. Klein, Ph.D., immediate past chair and professor of management and HR in the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University; Tom Darrow, founder and principal of Talent Connections LLC; Steven Ginsburgh, senior vice president of HR and workforce development at Universal Weather and Aviation; Richard Klimoski, Ph.D., professor of psychology and management at George Mason University; Elizabeth Larson, compensation director at MassMutual; Edward Lawler III, Ph.D., distinguished professor of business and director of the Center for Effective Organizations in the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California; Merry Lee Lison, SPHR, GPHR, director of HR and training at TRC Global Solutions; Nereida Perez, vice president global diversity and inclusion at Ingersoll Rand; M. Susan Taylor, Ph.D., professor in the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland; Padma Thiruvengadam, HR director at Integra; and Jeff T.H. Pon, Ph.D., chief human resources and strategy officer at SHRM.
The SHRM Foundation is a leading funder of HR research and awards $170,000 annually in education and certification scholarships to professional and student SHRM members, and doctoral students. The foundation has an annual exclusive Thought Leaders Retreat, which will be held Sept. 30 through Oct. 1, 2013, at the Westin Kierland Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz.
