The next wave of college students is preparing for graduation, purchasing caps and gowns, and taking final exams. But will these new college graduates have jobs after walking across the stage, diploma in hand?
Below are some job hunting tips for new graduates based on the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Hiring of 2015 College Graduates Survey.
When to apply:
The time to apply is now! One-third of organizations (35 percent) have already hired college students to begin working before or after graduation. But there is still time for college students to apply for jobs. The majority (71 percent) of the organizations that have not hired any graduates yet are planning to do so, an 18 percent increase since 2013.
“We are beginning to see entry-level hiring pick up,” said Evren Esen, director of survey programs at SHRM. “Compared to recent years, 2015 college graduates can be optimistic in their job search.”
Where to look:
Companies are still using traditional methods to recruit college graduates such as collaborating with colleges and universities (89 percent) and posting jobs on the company website (60 percent). About one-half are using employee referrals (54 percent) and social networking websites (52 percent) to recruit college students. This was followed by mobile technology (23 percent).
What to expect:
With college students (59 percent) ranking pay as their top job priority, young job seekers may be disappointed to find that salaries have not increased since last year. The majority of companies (81 percent) offered graduates about the same compensation package (salary plus benefits) as in 2014.
