HR Certification Institute Announces New Officers of 2010 Board of Directors
Eligibility Requirements for Certification Scheduled to Change in 2011
Alexandria, Va. – The HR Certification Institute, the internationally recognized certifying body for the HR profession, has appointed officers for its 2010 Board of Directors, according to Mary Power, CAE, executive director, HR Certification Institute.
“We are excited about the high caliber of professionalism and expertise our board members bring to the HR Certification Institute and how it positions us for our continued global expansion, which is critical in today’s work environment,” said Power. “Their leadership will allow us to continue to deliver certifications that assure both HR professionals and global business leaders that a certified HR professional is one with the right knowledge and experience to represent any company in today’s demanding marketplace.”
Officers for 2010 Board of Directors, elected to serve for a one-year term, are:
Chair Howard Winkler, Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR®), leads the 13-member board of directors. He served as Vice Chair in 2009 and is a project manager in Ethics and Compliance for Atlanta-based Southern Company. His expertise, gained from more than 30 years in the HR profession, includes strategy, workforce planning, recruiting, and labor relations.
Vice Chair Gardiner Hempel, Jr., CPA, Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR®), is a Partner in the Global Employer Services (GES) practice of Deloitte Tax LLP.He has 32 years of experience in the global mobility area, and has lived and worked in Germany, Hong Kong, and Japan. He is a long-time volunteer leader of SHRM and is serving his third year on the HR Certification Institute Board.
Treasurer/SecretaryMelanie Young, SPHR, GPHR, has extensive global HR leadership experience and is currently the Vice President, Global Human Resources for Corporate and the Global Alliance and Services Group at Arrow Electronics, Inc. She has lived in Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong during her career.She is a long-time SHRM volunteer and was instrumental in creating the first GPHR exam.
Immediate Past Chair Frances Hume, SPHR, will chair the Governance Committee and is President of Hume ‘n Resources LLC, a strategic HR consulting firm in Park City, Utah. Hume brings 32 years of HR experience, including international experience, to the board. She has been a SHRM volunteer since 1978 and an HR subject matter expert for the HR Certification Institute exams and SHRM Learning System.
The HR Certification Institute is an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and awards three core credentials: Professional in Human Resources (PHR®), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), and Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR). There are more than 116,000 in certificants in 70 countries.In 2011, eligibility requirements for certification will become more stringent and require additional years of professional experience to qualify at each level.
