ACIP and SHRM Praise Senate Progress on Immigration Reform Strategic Affiliates Commend Bipartisan ‘Gang of Eight’ and Look Forward to Working With All Stakeholders to Ensure Reform Works for U.S. Employers and the Workforce
Washington, D.C. April 17, 2013 — The American Council on International Personnel (ACIP) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) today commended introduction of the “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013,” legislation to fix the broken U.S. immigration system, and singled out for praise the tireless efforts of the bipartisan Senate ‘Gang of Eight’ and their staff to advance these critical reforms.“We are encouraged by the progress made on the bill in the U.S. Senate and look forward to engaging in the legislative process moving forward,” said ACIP Executive Director Lynn Shotwell. “The current U.S. immigration system is holding America back from greater growth and innovation. We need a system that is efficient and embodies the needs of U.S. employers and the American workforce, allowing employers to access and retain critical talent, and we stand ready to work with all policymakers to ensure that it does.”ACIP and SHRM — which collectively represent the U.S. employers and the HR and legal professionals who navigate the immigration system everyday — said that they will be reviewing the details of the lengthy legislation closely to ensure it achieves meaningful, practicable reforms for U.S. employers.“Immigration reform during this Congress offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fix a badly broken system. We congratulate the Senate ‘Gang of Eight’ for their work to prepare and introduce this bill,” said Michael Aitken, SHRM vice president of government affairs. “ACIP and SHRM look forward to working with both the Senate and the House to make sure that the employment verification system is effective and easy for employers to use and provides certainty in the hiring process.”About the Society for Human Resource Management and the American Council on International PersonnelAs strategic affiliates, the American Council on International Personnel (ACIP) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) help advance U.S. growth, innovation and job creation by supporting employers and their employees as they navigate the most pressing workforce and talent management issues, which includes reform of the U.S. immigration system.
