SHRM Certifications Receive Accreditation

HR’s SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credentials meet highest standard in testing

November 15, 2016
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) announced today that its SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) exams have been accredited, a pronouncement that the HR credentials meet the highest standards in testing.

The Buros Center for Testing, a premier test review center located at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, accredited SHRM Certification less than two years after the credentials were launched.

“HR professionals around the world have embraced SHRM Certification,” said Henry G. (Hank) Jackson, SHRM’s president and CEO.  “They know — and the Buros Center has confirmed through its accreditation — that SHRM credentials meet the highest quality and standards of an industry-leading certification. This is groundbreaking for human resource certifications.”

The Buros Center is an independent nonprofit that has reviewed or accredited other well-known tests, including major state educational achievement exams; admissions tests for medical school, law school and graduate school; and licensure exams for physical therapists, clinicians and technicians. The Buros Center specializes in auditing major educational and licensure testing programs for fairness in testing and overall psychometric quality of tests based on standards for testing developed by the American Psychological Association, the American Educational Research Association and the National Council on Measurement in Education, the leading authorities in high-stakes testing. It also works to improve testing, assessment and measurement practices, particularly in psychology and education.

In announcing the accreditation, Kurt F. Geisinger, Ph.D., director of the Buros Center, wrote, “We not only find that you meet our standards ... for accreditation, but we also find that you are thoroughly, competently and appropriately meeting the mission of SHRM, and therefore, the needs of the public….”

SHRM submitted a 1,900-page accreditation application that outlined the certifications’ testing methodology and exam practices. The review by the Buros Center was a six-month process.

Said Wayne Cascio, Ph.D., chair of the SHRM Certification Commission, “This is yet another major milestone for SHRM Certification.

“Applying for accreditation illustrates SHRM’s commitment to HR certification, and obtaining accreditation means that HR professionals and their employers can be assured that these credentials meet the stringent requirements that they expect of a world-class professional certification,” added Cascio, distinguished university professor and the Robert H. Reynolds chair in global leadership at the University of Colorado Denver School of Business.

More than 96,500 HR professionals in 105 countries hold SHRM credentials, creating one of the fastest-growing HR certification communities. The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP program was launched in January 2015 after years of research to define the competencies and knowledge relevant to today’s global HR professional. SHRM’s work on competencies continues, and an update of the framework for the certification exams — the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge — is being released next month.
