Cultural Competence Key to Business Success, Profitability: SHRM Conference on Diversity in Washington, D.C., Oct. 24-26, 2011

Alexandria, Va. – The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) announces the final lineup for the 2011 SHRM Diversity & Inclusion Conference & Exposition to be held in Washington, D.C., October 24-26 at the Marriott Wardman Park hotel, with a special event workshop the evening of October 23.

Executives from some of the world’s most successful companies and military leaders from several branches of the armed forces will join diversity experts who study the psychology—and sociology—of workplace inclusion. Together they will provide attendees insight for building a culturally competent, profitable organization.

More than 500 attendees from around the country are expected to register. Conference registration is open to executives, managers, and all workers seeking the knowledge and skills necessary to manage teams and contemporary workplace diversity issues. Registration will remain open for those seeking a one-day, two-day or three-day conference pass.

Keynote speakers include:

  • Robert L. Johnson, founder and chairman of The RLJ Companies, and founder and former chairman of Black Entertainment Television, or BET;
  • Susan O’Malley, former president of Washington Sports and Entertainment;
  • Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, Ph.D.,president, The University of Maryland, Baltimore; County;
  • Patricia Sowell, global chief diversity and inclusion officer, McDonald’s Corporation LLC; and
  • Erik Weihenmayer, world-class adventurer and the only blind man in history to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Considered game changers by many in the business world, the conference lineup also features corporate executives from the medical, financial services, entertainment, and food service industries:

  • TD Bank, USA David Boone,executive vice president, mass affluent segment;
  • McDonald’s Corporation Dennis Brennan, director of inclusion, global inclusion and intercultural management team;
  • Harpo Inc.Tenia Davis, vice president of human resources;
  • Humana Inc. Carleen Haas, vice president of talent strategies
  • Life Meets Work Kyra Cavanaugh, president;
  • Merck Deborah Dagit, vice president and global chief diversity officer; and
  • University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Candi Castleberry-Singleton, chief inclusion and diversity officer, and Jamie Scarano, director of integrated inclusion and internal operations.

Leaders from the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will also engage registrants, providing a mix of insight from the military sector.

Diversity expert Howard Ross will facilitate a special event workshop to take place on Sunday, October 23 at 5:30 p.m.–7:00 p.m.

The Ross workshop will feature his latest research and new book, Reinventing Diversity: Transforming Organizational Community to Strengthen People, Purpose and Performance, Ross is founder and chief learning officer of Cook-Ross Inc., a corporate consulting firm based in Silver Spring, Maryland.
