SHRM’s Strategy Conference to Draw Top HR, Business Leaders

Event gives executives opportunities for strategic thinking on hiring and corporate culture

Alexandria, Va., Aug. 25, 2011 – To help businesses think beyond standard practices to respond to economic shifts and changes in workforce demographics, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) will host the 2011 Strategy Conference, an opportunity for HR professionals and other business leaders to share information, exchange ideas and collaborate.

WHAT: SHRM 2011 Strategy Conference

WHEN: Oct. 5-7

WHERE: For the first time, the Strategy Conference will be in Chicago. Events will be held at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, 200 North Columbus Drive, Chicago, Ill., 60601.

DETAILS: Attended by top HR professionals and executives from industries including manufacturing, high-tech, insurance and finance, the conference will focus on helping executives develop strategies that support their organizations’ goals, mission and brand. It will feature keynote speakers:

  • Bill Conaty, former senior vice president of HR for General Electric, speaking about leadership;
  • Jeffrey Garten, former undersecretary of commerce in the Clinton administration and the Juan Trippe professor in the practice of international trade, finance, and business at the Yale School of Management, speaking about the company of the future;
  • Bridget van Kralingen, general manager of IBM North America, speaking about her experiences leading a large and well-known organization;
  • Don Tapscott, author and authority on the impact of technology, speaking about innovation, marketing and talent.

Conference sessions — which will focus on executing HR strategy, reinventing plans of action for hiring and the role of culture in business success — include “LinkedIn’s Strategies to Successful Talent Management.”

During the conference, SHRM will present the Michael R. Losey Human Resource Research Award, a $50,000 prize given annually to further the field of human resource management.

PRESS BRIEFING: Mark Schmit, SHRM’s director of research, will discuss results of the 2011 Job Satisfaction Research Report at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in the conference pressroom (Embassy Room). The survey will show, among other results, a change in the employee benefits that are top contributors to job satisfaction.

Preceding the Strategy Conference, the SHRM Foundation will host its annual Thought Leaders Retreat at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park. The retreat, attended by about 100 top-level HR executives and CEOs, will explore HR’s role in managing business risk. Speakers include Rick Marini, CEO of BranchOut, the largest professional networking service on Facebook; and Susan Podlogar, vice president of worldwide compensation and productivity at Johnson & Johnson.
