SHRM Forms Two Taskforces to Develop HR Standards

Groups will focus on diversity and inclusion and measurement and metrics

Alexandria, Va. − The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) today announced the formation of two taskforces to develop the Standard for Measures and Metrics and ​the Standard for Diversity and Inclusion in the human resources profession.

In February 2009, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) designated SHRM as the exclusive U.S. developer of human resources standards. SHRM led a taskforce to develop a consensus Standard for Performance Management later that year.

The new taskforce on the Standard for Measures and Metrics will create essential human capital measures and metrics to be used in business and financial communications.

The new taskforce responsible for developing the Standard for Diversity and Inclusion initially will develop three consensus standards: the organization’s top diversity professional position description, the essential elements of an organizational Diversity and Inclusion Program, and a panel of diversity metrics for an effective program.

SHRM will serve as the secretariat for both taskforces, overseeing the administrative needs of the standards-development process and ensuring all standards are developed in accordance with ANSI directives and procedures.

The SHRM standards initiatives will follow a recognized protocol for broad-based professional and public interest participation, formal balloting, a process for resolution of negative ballots and conflicting viewpoints, an appeals process, and a period for public review and comment before the standards are released for publication in their final form. Each standard will be individually submitted for formal certification by ANSI as an American National Standard.

Representatives from four interest categories will serve on the taskforces: practitioner representatives (human resources professionals), customers (public and private sector organizations and employees), developers (suppliers and vendors, academics, attorneys, researchers, and consultants) and general interest representatives (all other interested parties). Membership on the committees will be sufficiently diverse to ensure reasonable balance without dominance by a single interest category.

Potential representatives of each interest group should be professionally qualified by education and experience. Persons who wish to apply for membership on these taskforces or to nominate another to serve on the taskforces should e-mail Lee Webster, Director, HR Standards, at HRSTDS@SHRM.ORG no later than Sep. 10.

Taskforce members will be expected to comply with written SHRM consensus standard procedures and with the written SHRM conflict-of-interest and anti-trust compliance policies.
