2nd Annual SHRM-FWI Conference to Offer Insights on Creating Flexible Workplaces

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 15, 2012 – The second annual Workflex Conference hosted by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Families and Work Institute (FWI) will feature some of the nation’s most authoritative voices on creating effective and flexible workplaces.

WHAT: 2012 Workflex Conference: Re-Imagining the Workplace

WHEN: Oct. 23 and 24, 2012

WHERE: Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, 540 N Michigan Ave., Chicago

DETAILS: The 1 ½-day conference will bring together thought leaders in workplace flexibility, including FWI President Ellen Galinsky, and will feature work/life experts Kyra Cavanaugh, president of Life Meets Work; Kathy Kacher, president of Career/Life Alliance Services; and Shirley Davis, vice president, and Lisa Horn, senior government relations advisor, of SHRM.

In an interactive session on Wednesday, Oct. 24, conference-goers will participate in a lively discussion about reimagining the workplace and will identify the strategies, solutions and skills necessary to implement effective and flexible workplace practices.

In a keynote session, actress and author Holly Robinson Peete will speak about “Luck Favors the Prepared: One Crazy Momma’s Balancing-Act Tips.”

PRESS BRIEFING: New research from SHRM and the Congressional Management Foundation, “Life in Congress: Managing Work and Life in the U.S. House and Senate,” will be released at a press briefing from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 24 in the Michigan Room of the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile.

In addition, FWI and SHRM will release two new publications at the conference, and their leaders will be available for questions:

  • The 2013 Guide to Bold New Ideas for Making Work Work, which highlights the practices of the winners of the Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility
  • WORKFLEX: The Essential Guide to Effective and Flexible Workplaces, which has been described by Carol Evans, CEO of Working Mother media, as a “must read for everyone who seeks to implement, measure, support or advance flexibility. This book is a game changer!” ABC Correspondent Claire Shipman says, “From case studies to legal issues to compelling research, it’s all here, and it’s a book that will surely become essential reading for every 21st century manager, HR head and CEO.”

JOINT CONFERENCE: The Workflex Conference will be held in conjunction with SHRM’s Diversity & Inclusion Conference & Exposition Oct. 22-24 at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile. More than 500 HR practitioners and executives are expected at the conference that will feature more than 30 sessions. Keynote speakers include Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee, a Liberian peace activist who was among those carrying the Olympic flag at the opening of the 2012 Games in London.
