Staff Lead Biographies

Michael A. Aitken 
Vice President, Government Affairs 
Society for Human Resource Management

Mike Aitken joined the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) in 2003 and since then he has been responsible for all SHRM governmental affairs endeavors. Mike currently serves as SHRM’s Vice President of Government Affairs and he is a strategic advisor to the Society’s overall external relations activities. 

As a member of SHRM’s senior management team, Mike plays a key role in helping to set the strategic direction of the organization, offering important counsel on SHRM’s educational programs and professional development opportunities.

With over 20 years of experience working on workplace and workforce issues, Mike is a leading authority on issues important to the human resource profession. As one of SHRM’s primary spokespeople, Mike is regularly interviewed by the media and sought out as a speaker for business audiences.

Prior to joining SHRM in 2003, Mike spent 14 years with the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR), which represents the human resource professionals at 1,900 higher education institutions.  

Mike currently serves as a board member for OpenWork and is an employer representation on the U.S. delegation to the International Labor Conference in 2015 and 2016. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of San Diego. 

Patrick J. Brady 

Senior Advisor, Government Affairs
Society for Human Resource Management

Patrick Brady is a Senior Advisor of Government Relations in SHRM national's Alexandria, Virginia office handling labor, employment, civil rights and workforce development issues.

Prior to joining SHRM, Mr. Brady was a Manager, Public Policy at WorldatWork – a nonprofit human resources association for professionals and organizations focused on compensation, benefits, work-life effectiveness programs and total rewards. In this role, Mr. Brady served as the association's lobbyist for the U.S House of Representatives as well as the federal agencies with jurisdiction over employment matters. He was instrumental developing and implementing the association's strategy focused on the Department of Labor's 2016 update to the overtime regulation.  

Prior to joining WorldatWork, Mr. Brady was a Senior Associate at Bond Associates – a boutique appropriations lobbying firm that specialized in foreign development and international exchange programs for institutions of higher education. In this role, Mr. Brady secured over $80 million for environmental remediation of dioxin and related health activates in Vietnam for individuals exposed to Agent Orange as well as $60 million for the Cooperative Development Program administered by the United States Agency for International Development. 

Mr. Brady is a graduate of Loyola University of Chicago with Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Minors in Economics and Criminal Justice. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife and son.
