Most of us are accidental instructional designers, asked to step up and develop learning materials. We often work on instinct and established norms to produce something that we think will work, a process that we frequently find ourselves repeating. But can intuition and precedence alone create immersive experiences for your learners?
With learning and development becoming increasingly cross-functional, it’s imperative to guide learning design using robust evidence-based practices. Instructional Design (ID) is the science of developing instructional materials and learning solutions to maximize retention, impact and effectiveness. It synthesizes a wide body of research about how people learn and how the mind works into a series of practical approaches and instructional frameworks. Following these approaches can enable the instructional designer to produce a solution in a planned and systematic way that directly targets business needs and learner profiles.
In this hands-on program, you will get a firm foundation in applied instructional theories and use these to inform the design of structured learning collaterals that enhance the learner experience. You will also get insights into incorporating technology including m-learning, augmented learning and screencasting meaningfully into conventional training. The program will be facilitated primarily through two powerful approaches: guided discovery and loop input, both of which allow you to immersively explore and immediately apply techniques. You can also choose to take up an optional action learning project with complimentary coaching support over an extended two month period.
NB: To allow for a more focused exploration of core design practices, the workshop doesn’t cover needs and impact analysis tools. Additionally, due to the short duration of the workshop, the design scope will be limited to instructor-led training and blended learning; e-learning design would require a longer program.
