Board Nomination Process

Board Appointment Process

Under the bylaws, the Board of Directors of SHRM's Executive Network, HR People + Strategy carefully reviews candidates put forward by the Governance Committee which is comprised of current and former volunteer leaders. The Governance Committee carefully reviews each candidate’s credentials with the following criteria in mind:

    • Accomplished HR leader currently serving as chief HR officer in a medium to large company
    • Impact on the HR profession (demonstrated thought leadership through operating innovation, best practice development, speaking, writing or conducting important research on HR-related topics)
    • Board diversity (ethnicity, gender, type of Industry, years of leadership experience)
    • Volunteer history and engagement (active membership participation on committees, learning events or other activities at the national or affiliate organizations)
    • Personal recommendations
    • Ability to commit time (3-year term with 2 in-person meetings + 3 two-hour conference calls per year + additional events and committee responsibilities)
Each year, the Governance Committee identifies the candidates they believe most closely meet the current needs of the organization. The Board then considers these individuals and votes on each candidate during the Fall Board Meeting. In several cases, candidates have been nominated several times over the years before being elected to join the Board, during which time they have maintained or increased their level of volunteerism and continued to develop their career.
