Elizabeth Rissler Pratt, SHRM-SCP, is in a constant state of reconstruction and renewal.

After raising two daughters as a single mom while working in HR for a manufacturing company for 17 years, she went back to school full time in 2016 and received her bachelor’s degree in business management in December of last year. In January, she began an MBA program.

In her spare time, you might find her—power tool in hand—overhauling a kitchen or bathroom in an apartment building she owns.

“I am attracted to a feeling of achievement when a job is done well,” she says.

Just like HR, a home renovation project requires advance planning, the ability to make adjustments along the way and “the finish work” that makes your home or workplace unique, she says.

Pratt is currently the legislative director for the Montana State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). She has also served as director, treasurer, certification director and foundation director of the state council. She is a past president of her local Big Sky Chapter of SHRM.

What obstacles have you overcome to get where you are today?

Self-doubt. I tended to underestimate my knowledge in the business world. However, I now realize that I have a broad array of wisdom and experience that add value in most situations.

What’s your work philosophy?

Don’t jump to conclusions. When navigating a problem or conflict, take the time to talk with people who have different perspectives. Then, develop a plan to address the situation. Treat people with respect, in all levels of the company and in life in general.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

You can do anything that you set your mind to. Never say “never.”
