Some employees who are battling cancer use a patient navigator to find resources, counseling services and medical care when difficulties arise. As a neutral third party, a navigator can offer advice that an employer cannot. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act requires that each state health insurance exchange establish a navigator program. The American Cancer Society is among the organizations that offer information about navigators.
A navigator can be provided by:
- An insurance company.
- A hospital.
- A community group.
- A navigator might:
- Find doctors.
- Explain treatment options.
- Accompany patients on medical visits.
- Assist with insurance and paperwork problems.
