Consider a Patient Navigator

Helping employees diagnosed with cancer

Some employees who are battling cancer use a patient navigator to find resources, counseling services and medical care when difficulties arise. As a neutral third party, a navigator can offer advice that an employer cannot. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act requires that each state health insurance exchange establish a navigator program. The American Cancer Society is among the organizations that offer information about navigators.

A navigator can be provided by:

  • An insurance company.
  • A hospital.
  • A community group.
  • A navigator might:
  • Find doctors.
  • Explain treatment options.
  • Accompany patients on medical visits.
  • Assist with insurance and paperwork problems.
