​​Cecile Alper-Leroux began her career as the HR and office manager for a midsize technology company in South Dakota and then moved to a similar role for a 40-person law firm in St. Paul, Minn.

Breakthrough Moment
For years, Alper-Leroux relied on spreadsheets as her “HR technology.” From conversations with her HR peers, she knew that others faced the same challenge: too much work to do with too little technology designed for practitioners in smaller organizations. Just how important this was hit her when she had to call in payroll while she was in labor with her first child. “I kept thinking, ‘It’s got to be better than this,’ ” she says.

Lesson Learned
Though she says she’s not technically inclined, she understood there was a problem that needed to be solved. “I knew others were struggling the same way,” she says, “and I wanted to be part of the solution.” To her, a new career focus on improving workplace technology is aligned with her vision of being the best HR professional she can be. “HR’s always thinking of ways to make things better,” she says.
