Vanessa Alvarado Guevara loves her beautiful island of Puerto Rico, where she has lived all her life. So she is committed to working to help improve the island’s current financial crisis in any way she can.
“Now more than ever, our future will depend on the courage and commitment that our HR leaders have to inspire our people to make a difference, to change traditional ways of working,” Alvarado says.
She believes she’s doing just that by volunteering with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). She began as a college student and now is president of the SHRM Puerto Rico Chapter, which has more than 1,000 members. She also chairs the educational committee for the chapter’s annual conference and previously served on the chapter board, representing the island’s southern region.
In 2014, Alvarado, whose employer makes medical equipment and technology, was named one of Puerto Rico’s top “40 under 40” most promising young business leaders by Caribbean Business, a newspaper in Puerto Rico.
“I want to be an optimistic role model for others, becoming the change we want to see in Puerto Rico,” she says.
How did you get interested in HR?
Early in my career, I discovered that the HR profession allows me to live my personal values on a daily basis. I can serve so many people, and that gives me the opportunity to make a positive impact on their lives.
What’s your greatest accomplishment?
I led an effort last year to create a career development program for our company’s technical professionals that helps them achieve personal and professional career goals. It also enables managers to have successful conversations with employees about their career paths. The response from both leaders and employees has been extremely positive. We are currently deploying this tool across the global network.
What do you enjoy in your spare time?
I have visited more than 25 different countries. What I enjoy most is discovering new cultures, while valuing the diversity of the people and learning from them. And I enjoy creating incredible memories with my husband and baby girl.
