At 28, Cheran Davis, SHRM-CP, is something of an HR prodigy. While she was in high school, she worked as an intern in the HR office at food, facilities and uniform services company Aramark. There, she began to dig deep into HR issues and learn the skills required to support union and nonunion workers by managing labor and employee relations issues, including investigations, terminations and negotiations of collective bargaining agreements.
Today, as multiproperty HR manager with Marriott International Inc., in Detroit, she supports more than 240 employees—from dishwashers to general managers—at two Detroit locations: Courtyard by Marriott downtown and Marriott at the Renaissance.
"Helping others to reach their goals is what keeps me going forward," she says. "It’s very satisfying to see someone develop their skills and grow in their role."
She also sets ambitious goals for herself. One of her key accomplishments in 2016 was developing a supervisory training program for all new managers at the properties she supports. The training, which will cover topics such as communication skills, motivating yourself and others, problem-solving, and conflict resolution, will be offered monthly in one-hour sessions.
In a previous position as HR project coordinator at Mead Johnson Nutrition, Davis saved her company $30,000 by recommending and creating digital training materials. And she earned her SHRM-CP in 2016 while working full time.
