In college, Jessica Gofforth planned to study law. But an HR management class she took during her freshman year at the University of Northern Iowa made her change her mind. By the time she was a senior, she was president of the university’s SHRM student chapter. Ultimately, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business management with an emphasis on HR.
Today, the 26-year-old human resource business partner supports employees at Bemis Co. Inc., a global manufacturer of flexible packing products in Lancaster, Wis. She says SHRM has been an indispensable aid in her job.
"Having all the tools and resources on the website is really great," she says.
In addition to her full-time job, Gofforth, an Iowa resident, also holds several volunteer leadership positions with the Iowa SHRM State Council. Her efforts have brought visibility and recognition to the activities of student chapters through various networking opportunities.
Three years ago, she started working on launching a student and young professionals track at the Iowa SHRM State Conference. The track was offered in 2016 and attracted about 60 attendees.
Gofforth says she plans to continue her efforts to nurture the next generation of HR leaders.
