Lauren Gonzalez, SHRM-SCP, doesn’t just support one business; she supports three. Gonzalez, 29, senior manager, human resources and talent acquisition, is part of a five-member HR team that serves a family of businesses—Smartlink, a national communications company, Driven, a corporate car service and the Chesapeake Bayhawks, a Major League Lacrosse team. The organizations share the same owner and work out of the same corporate office in Annapolis. Gonzalez and her team support nearly 700 employees nationwide. She was promoted to HR manager within a year of joining the organization, taking on duties that had previously been handled by three people.
"I’m always doing something different and learning something new," Gonzalez says. "I’m never bored."
The young leader discovered HR during her senior year at the University of Maryland when she worked as an executive assistant. One of her responsibilities was processing payroll. Her next job was with an HR outsourcing company.
"One opportunity came up after another until I was managing a portfolio of clients," Gonzalez says.
Last summer, she achieved another milestone in her career when she earned her SHRM-SCP. She studied on weekends for four months and passed the certification exam on the first try.
"That was a great moment when I found out I passed," she says. "I definitely did a happy dance!"
