What a difference 18 months can make. That’s how long it took Randy Louis, 27, to revamp onboarding and help develop a system for tracking new hires’ progress at the 106-employee American Gastroenterological Association in Bethesda, Md., where he is an HR generalist.
After a focus group indicated that new employees weren’t sure what was expected of them, Louis helped devise a program requiring managers to develop a 90-day work plan for each new hire spelling out what tasks should be done by when.
He follows up with IT to make sure new hires receive the equipment and software required to do their jobs. He also checks back with employees after 30, 60 and 90 days to make sure all is going well.
“Little things really go far” in making new employees feel comfortable, Louis says.
He also implemented the organization’s first mentorship program to help employees develop skills in areas of their choosing. A pilot program was launched in August with five pairs of mentors and mentees.
In addition, he prompted the association to hire a young worker through the District of Columbia’s summer youth program and personally mentored the individual.
Louis, who has a master’s degree in employment law and labor relations, is currently studying to take the SHRM-CP certification exam.
