About 2.1 million children living in U.S. households were adopted, according to 2010 census data.
However, specific figures on how many adoptions take place each year in the U.S. are hard to come by. In federal fiscal year 2012, there were 8,668 international adoptions, down 7 percent from 2011 because of Russia’s ban on adoptions by Americans, according to the U.S. State Department.
In July 2012, the U.S. Health and Human Services Department (HHS) reported that 50,000 children were adopted from foster care in federal fiscal year 2011. Another 104,000 were waiting to be adopted.
Thousands more children are adopted through private domestic adoption agencies and through adoptions that are privately arranged. In 2008, about 135,813 children were adopted, according to an HHS report released in 2011. About 41 percent of those were foster care adoptions, 13 percent were international adoptions and 46 percent were domestic adoptions.
