Top recommendation for HR: This is going to sound weird, but I would recommend The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance (Current, 2014).
Why it’s relevant: If you just take the word “athletic” out of the second part of the title, you’ve got “Inside the Science of Extraordinary Performance.” And if HR isn’t about creating more extraordinary performance, I don’t know what we’re about. It answers pressing questions such as “Is practice more important than talent? How do we celebrate diversity? Can you change a person after they join your team?”
What I’m bringing to the beach: Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind (Harper, 2015) by Yuval Noah Harari. It’s fabulous.
